Characters
LORCA
19 | (Mezzo-Soprano)
Lorca begins the play as a guarded, inward-focused young woman whose only goal is a cure. Intelligent and deeply reflective, she engages the world through language and art, using words as armor while keeping others at a distance. As confinement and shared mortality dismantle her defenses, Lorca allows herself to become part of the group, revealing a capacity for vulnerability, connection, and emotional honesty.
Audition songs: “Will I Die Alone,” “Long-Cast Shadows”
GREG
19 | (Barritone)
Greg begins as a charming, restless young man shaped by a childhood of constant movement. He prides himself on freedom, masking anger and fear with humor, flirtation, and bravado, and believing that escape is the same as independence. Beneath the swagger, however, lies a surprising sensitivity to beauty and meaning, awakened through his connection with Lorca and challenged by Stephanie’s moral clarity. Over the course of the play, Greg moves from avoidance to commitment, ultimately choosing connection and responsibility over wandering.
Audition songs: “O, Restless Heart," “Long-Cast Shadows”
STEPHANIE
17 | (Mezzo-Soprano)
Stephanie begins Even In Shadow as a sheltered, open-hearted country girl shaped by a loving family and a close-knit community. Gentle, sincere, and optimistic, she seeks connection even when it isn’t returned, and her social innocence initially sets her apart from the other teens. Through ongoing conflict with Greg, Stephanie is forced to confront ridicule, emotional pressure, and vulnerability—yet rather than abandoning her values, she comes to understand why they are worth defending. By the end of the play, she stands firmly in who she is: still kind and hopeful, but no longer fragile, grounded instead in conviction, compassion, and courage.
Audition songs: “God's Original," “Trouble”
NEAL
18 | (Baritone)
Neal is the most emotionally grounded of the four live-in patients, bringing intelligence, calm, and quiet depth to every scene. He relies on logic and science to make sense of a world he experiences as dangerous and unpredictable, carefully tracking his symptoms as both a coping mechanism and an act of hope. Though analytical, Neal is warm, perceptive, and kind, using dry humor to steady the group and counterbalance Greg’s volatility. As he faces his own mortality, Neal begins to question whether logic alone is enough, ultimately choosing connection and shared purpose over emotional isolation.
Audition songs: “We Don't Have Time," “I Can See The Sunrise”
CHRISTINE CAREY, MD.
Early–mid 40s| (Soprano)
Christine Carey has the largest emotional arc in the story. She begins as a controlled, brilliant, and intimidating physician who keeps strict emotional distance from her patients in order to survive the toll of incurable disease. Beneath that self-protective reserve is a deeply compassionate humanitarian who has lost touch with her own needs and identity. Through the guidance of her lifelong friend Kellie, her growing bond with the teens in her care, and the validation of Gary’s support, Christine moves from isolation and control toward acceptance and shared humanity. By the end of the play, she has not conquered loss, but she has been transformed by love, trust, and the courage to stand with others in the face of it.
Audition songs: “Even In Shadow," “Colors of My World”
KELLIE DAVIS, MD.
Early–mid 40s| (Soprano)
Kellie is Christine Carey’s lifelong friend and emotional counterbalance—warm, expressive, and vibrantly alive where Chris is restrained and inward. A physician who has spent years caring for the seriously ill, Kellie meets suffering with realism, compassion, and an unflinching acceptance of death as inevitable and meaningful. Her strength lies not in indulgence, but in honesty; she offers difficult truth when it matters most. In Act 2, this integrity allows Kellie to speak peace into Chris’s war with death, becoming a quiet anchor of clarity, friendship, and grace.
Audition songs: “Bird Flying," “Even In Shadow”
GARY GALVANI
Mid 40s | (Baritone)
Gary Galvani is the founder and CEO of Fairway Records, a man whose success has gradually narrowed his vision and dulled his humanity. Challenged by his wife Jennifer, Gary begins to reexamine his values through his growing involvement with Dr. Carey and a group of teens suffering from a rare and painful disease. As he chooses to support them—both financially and emotionally—Gary reconnects with idealism, compassion, and the satisfaction of making a genuine difference. By the end of the play, his priorities are clarified, and he embraces a broader, more honorable vision of success rooted in responsibility, generosity, and human connection.
Audition songs: “Lost In You," “The Boardroom”
JENNIFER GALVANI
Mid 40s | (Alto)
Jennifer Galvani is Gary’s wife and the moral heart of his storyline. Though physically limited by illness, she possesses quiet authority, emotional clarity, and unwavering integrity. Jennifer confronts Gary with honesty and love, reminding him of the idealism and compassion that once guided his life. Gentle without being passive and discerning without bitterness, she speaks difficult truths without accusation. Portrayed in a wheelchair, Jennifer’s vulnerability underscores her courage as she chooses trust, hope, and grace, quietly reshaping the course of the story through strength of character rather than force.
Audition songs: “Lost In You," “Maybe Tomorrow”
